
Two goals from Glen Stanley and Phil Williams gave Godalming all three points at Moatside on Saturday. Merstham started the game brightly, and had a number of opportunities to take the lead within the opening ten minutes. Phil Williams had the best chance of the half for Godalming, but his shot was well saved by Merstham 'keeper Ian Chatfield.
After a goalless first half Merstham took the lead two minutes into the second half, when a cross found Merstham debutant Cedric Abraham who powered his shot past Chiweshe. The lead did not last long when a Merstham defender handled in the penalty area and Glen Stanley cooly converted the penalty. The game opened up after this, and Town took the lead when Stanley found Williams for a simple finish into the bottom corner. With ten minutes to go, Graeme Purdy pressured the Merstham 'keeper into a poor clearance which dropped to Phil Williams, who found Glen Stanley who expertly put the ball into the top corner. Town weren't finished yet, and when Williams raced through and rounded the the goalkeeper it was 4-1 to Godalming. Billy Marshall added a late consolation for Merstham, but Godalming ended up with a deserved three points.
